It’s a Tough Job…

A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

Something’s been going on with Sivan. For the last two weeks, ever since we returned to Israel, she’s been speaking about bicycles non-stop. For the first few days I simply nodded my head and waited for it to pass. I put it on hormones or something like that – you know how women can be – they need to be humored sometimes. I’m sure it will pass soon.

In the past we only talked bikes when discussing my weekend ride. When I mention that I’m craving a good long ride up and down a mountain – something like a four hour trip should do the trick – it usually drives her mad. “Ride during the week” she’ll usually say in her commanding tone, “the weekend is family time”. I bite my tongue to not shout that her career with its endless international trips didn’t take “family time” into account, because at the end of the day I do love Sivan’s “bulldozer” personality and truth be told we all deserve some family bonding time. Things have been changing lately at home. She’s home a lot more often now. You know what – I feel really good about the situation at home lately. So what’s all this about my bike trips for heaven’s sake? I continue with small-talk: “I can’t find a buyer for my Canondale”.  “So don’t sell it”, she says while washing the dishes. “Keep it as a reserve bike in Switzerland….” I sense that Tafla has found her prey. Apparently she’s serious about the hotel in Switzerland. She’s going for it – so it will inevitably happen.

Wow. I need to sit down for a bit.

And before I realize that it has happened, I’ve already been given my first chore. “You’ve got to go to Switzerland for at least a week to scout out all the options for trails and paths in the area.” My heart missed a beat. Did I hear her right? I think to myself: A tough job, but somebody’s got to do it.
